Karen Y. Gerhardt has had a passion for horses ever since she can remember. She is an art director/graphic designer who took up sculpting equines in 1997 as a hobby and creative break from design on the computer.

In 2006, Karen retired from the design field to pursue her horse art passion full time. (And in 2008, she has broken into dog sculpture!) Her prize-winning equine sculptures in ceramic are owned by collectors all over the world.

"Invariably the first thing I am asked when I tell people that I am an equine sculptor is: 'Do you ride and/or own a horse?' They are always surprised when I tell them that I do not. I have always loved horses purely in the visual: for their form, movement, grace. When I am sitting on a horse, I can no longer SEE it!"

Sculptures in Fine Ceramic

Being very interested in the beauty and diversity of horse color, Karen has chosen ceramic as her reproduction medium. This is a lovely and permanent media which meets her high standards for detail in the reproduction of her sculpture. Karen finishes them in ceramic overglazes, realizing her desire for accuracy, realism, and beauty of horse color.

Karen's sculptures in ceramic are slip-cast in highest quality English bone china, a process which is slow and difficult. Each piece is then finished by her in a unique color with ceramic glazes which can take dozens of firings in the kiln just for one piece. Therefore less than 20 ceramic pieces across all her sculptures are finished each year.

The work shown on this website's pages are finished ceramic pieces which have been sold or are part of Karen's personal collection. Subscribe to the BLOG to stay informed of the newest finished ceramic pieces for sale or available for a custom-color commission.
